Explore Nature Trails at Nearby Watchung Reservation

The largest nature reserve in New Jersey's Union County, Watchung Reservation offers outdoor recreation in a serene and scenic environment. A ten-minute drive from our hotel in Westfield, the Watchung Reservation includes a six-mile trail through the county's historic sites, as well as a mountain range and Lake Surprise, where fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are popular activities. Bring the kids to play on the Loop Playground, go on a horseback ride, or visit the Trailside Nature & Science Center to learn about the park's geology, history, and the best places to view foliage.

  • Are there any BBQ or Picnic Spots at Watchung Reservation?

    Watchung Reservation offers five picnic areas throughout the park, each featuring at least one barbecue grill. Picnic areas can accommodate between 125-250 people for large gatherings or small families, with reservations. Permit are available for picnics with beer or liquor and all picnic areas must be reserved online or by calling (908) 527-4900.
  • Can I get horseback riding lessons at Watchung Stables?

    Yes, WAtchung Stables offers guided trail rides on horseback on Sundays and Saturdays. Visitors can arrange for group rides or private outings of up to 15 riders. Equipment rental for horseback riding at Watchung Reservation costs $32 for Union County residents and $45 for out-of-county visitors; private lessons require an additional $32 instructor fee.
